The lake has hundreds of Tufa formations.
Tufa are the result of minerals, from underwater springs that bubble up, building-up piles of crystals. They are visible, now, but will be underwater, as the lake fills up.
Starting in 1941, the City of Los Angeles diverted mountain streams' water from the lake, dropping the level more than 45 feet, over the years.   After a lawsuit in the early 1990's, they were stopped from diverting it, on such a large scale.
